So it seems that recently, there's been a lot of junk going on in the fandom (well, at least in lion_lamb) over Bella-bashing or character-bashing in general. And I've taken the time to think over my own opinions of the three main characters: Edward, Bella, and Jacob. And the result of that thinking is this post. XD Here it goes:
For most of this time, I have not held Bella in the best regard, exactly. To me, she always came across as a selfish or rather ungrateful person. However, I do believe that her heart is in the right place. I've thought hard about why she made the decisions she did, and it's simply because of the very difficult situation she was placed in: choosing between her best friend and her soul mate. The guy who put her back together when she had no one, or the guy she simply can't live without. Nevertheless, I simply don't agree with the way she went about "making things right," or trying. But I guess this character quirk or "flaw," whatever you would like to call it, is necessary in making it a great story. She has these flaws, and she is a normal person trying to get by. The surreal yet understandable/relatable feeling to the story is what makes it so captivating.
I'm sorry, but Jacob pisses me off to no end. Yes, he's a teenager with raging hormones. But he doesn't know how or when to stop. This brute characteristic of his makes me want to bitchslap him whenever I read about him forcing himself on Bella. He knows full and well that Bella can't live without Edward. They are soul mates, and they love each other. But...what's this? He's still kissing Bella and being an obnoxious dog? You can't control who you fall in love with; I understand that. But you can still control your actions and think about how they will affect others. He hurt Edward knowingly. Yes, Edward would fight for Bella if he was in the shoes of Jacob. BUT, he would also stop when Bella asked him to. He would respect the fact that she had chosen someone else, and he would not continue to make it difficult for Bella and Jacob. The fact that Jacob is tactless and obnoxious is basically what draws me away from him. I understand how he is fighting for Bella's life and the chance for her to live a normal life. However, you can only go so far.
This brings me to my final and most favorite character: Edward. There are so many facets to his personality, and it simply amazes me. He has this internal battle going on constantly: he loves this girl and wants nothing but happiness for her, but one wrong move from him could kill her. He wants to spend all of eternity with her, but he doesn't want to sacrifice her soul in exchange for it. The fact that he has such an intense love for Bella but also has to possess an immense amount of self-control is incredibly intriguing but very admirable to me. He always acts like such a gentleman, and his politeness and caring nature makes me love him even more. At first, I was torn when he left in New Moon. I didn't understand how he could love Bella so much but still leave her and basically take her life away from her. But Edward's love goes so deep that he will hurt himself in order to keep Bella safe and happy. This altruistic personality towards Bella is probably my favorite characteristic of him. And yet, his departure was a mistake because he simply didn't know how much Bella really did love him. He thought Bella would be better off without the danger he and his family brought to her, but he was wrong. And that, my friends, proves how Edward really isn't perfect
even though he remains perfectly amazing to me.So that's my opinion of the three of them.
If you're still reading this, then you deserve a cookie. :D
